Song - New England

NEW ENGLAND

Untied high tops, acid-wash jeans and my mullet is long
An opinion on all things, I don’t know when I’m wrong
Callin’ you from a pay phone ‘cause I got a dime to drop
Blastin’ Van Halen on the way to the pizza shop

It’s the Eighties, outside of Boston
I can barely drive a car but I think I wanna fly to space
Maybe we’ll both get jobs in Austin
Pumpin’ gas, pumpin’ beers, pumpin’ anything to leave this place

I’m in New England
I’m innocent
I’m in love

City college campus, but I’m not studyin’ much
All these old professors love to talk about such and such
I don’t know where I came from but I’m told that I’m Dutch
I don’t know where I’m goin’ but I learned how to drive a clutch

It’s the Nineties in Rhode Island
Know what I don’t wanna do but don’t know what I wanna do
They say Gen X is a rough in the diamond
We ain’t tryin’ to start trouble, we didn’t realize we grew

I’m in New England
I’m innocent
I’m in love

I’m wearin’ a tie now, except on Dressdown Friday
Our favorite times are just watchin’ our kids play
We got a minivan and sometimes it feels cliché
But we work and we learn and relax and we like it this way

It’s the 2000s in Connecticut
We’re the same, no matter how much changed since we began
I’ve learned a bunch of etiquette
But haven’t learned why some now scowl at me and call me “the man”

I’m in New England
I’m innocent
I’m in love

Well I’ve been to the bottom of Africa
And I been across the world to Sydney
But my home has never left New England
In the fall it’s still kinda pretty
It might be time one day to head out west
Or somewhere closer to the sun
But, at least for today, I think what’s best
Is to keep tellin’ everyone

I’m in New England
I’m innocent
I’m in love

I’ve stepped on some toes and had sharp elbows
I haven’t been perfect
But I can sleep at night ‘cause I’ve mostly done right
It’s all been worth it
Other than a misdemeanor or two, I ain’t done no crime
We raised our kids well
There’s a nice view from this northeast mountain we’ve climbed
As far as I can tell

I’m in New England
I’m innocent
I’m in love

I’m in New England
I’m innocent
I’m in love

Still in New England
Still innocent, too
Still in love with you

I’m in New England
I’m innocent
I’m in love
