Ride With Reilly
RIDE WITH REILLY
THE ATLANTIC BREAKMEN
From the LP "More Light Than Shade"
Reilly was a mutt, never more’n thirty pounds
As I worked for Gramps, Reilly followed me
We covered 60 acres on those grounds
When I was a teen in Mississippi
Sometimes Grandma’d holla, “Where you been?
Dinner’s been ready for a while”
I’d say, “On the tractor with Reilly, is that a sin?”
“Maybe, son, that’s not God’s style”
Takin’ a ride with Reilly
That’s what I always loved to do
Takin’ a ride with Reilly
Both of us barkin’ at the moon
When I was 16, I got a blue Corvette
Only problem was, it didn’t drive
Gramps helped me tune it like a jet
Reilly watched us, 9 to 5
I played baseball and went on dates
Even played me some guitar
But my favorite times were just drivin’ them straights
Me and Reilly, under the stars
Takin’ a ride with Reilly
That’s what I always loved to do
Takin’ a ride with Reilly
Head out the window, barkin’ at the moon
As Reilly got old, she got a little confused
A guy tried to pat her on the cheek
Reilly gave him a bite and left a bruise
And it happened again the next week
Judge said to Grandma, “Ma’am, I’m sorry
But that dog gotta be put down”
By the time Grandma came lookin’ for me
My Vette had crossed six towns
Takin’ a ride with Reilly
That’s what I always loved to do
Takin’ a ride with Reilly
I don’t think we’re gonna be back soon
Takin’ a ride with Reilly
That’s what I always loved to do
Just you and me, Reilly
Go ahead, bark at the moon
Takin’ a ride with Reilly
How’s Oklahoma sound to you?
Just you and me, Reilly
Go ahead, bark at the moon
